We believe that decolonizing our financial system and building a regenerative economy will take both individual and communal efforts. At Root & Web Community Financial, we aim to support both efforts through client-centered services as well as through community-focused mutual aid and education.
Margaret Nickens (they/he) is the founder of Root & Web Community Financial. As a queer, nonbinary, and polyamorous person, they set out to offer financial services aligned with clients’ values and lived realities. Their path began through personal financial struggle after a divorce, when mounting debt and a lack of tools left them feeling overwhelmed and out of control.
Becoming a Certified Financial Planner® helped Margaret build stability and important knowledge, but they found traditional approaches incomplete without addressing the emotions, shame, and trauma behind financial behavior. Through the Trauma of MoneyTM certification program, they integrated trauma-informed, emotion-centered methods into their work with the hope of creating meaningful change for themselves and their clients.
Margaret now reimagines financial planning as a communal practice—moving beyond individual and nuclear-family models toward shared support systems inspired by liberatory frameworks. With Root & Web, they bring together trauma-informed care, values-aligned planning, and collective approaches to help communities build lasting financial security and abundance.
A healthy and thriving economy uses resources mindfully in order to protect and preserve our Earth, prioritizes the needs and wellbeing of all community members, and provides for all aspects of our ecosystem. Money is a tool that can be used for harm but can also be used for healing, connection, and justice. We can be part of changing the way money is used and distributed within our society.
The work of decolonizing our behaviors, mindsets, and systems is necessary for the healing of our financial lives and our financial systems. In the United States, we are living on stolen land, and our economic wealth has been built on the backs of abusive labor techniques that target People of the Global Majority and other marginalized populations. Healing must prioritize the most impacted and involve reparations.
The wellbeing of this planet and its inhabitants are far more important than are mass profits. We believe in working towards a world in which community care is prioritized over wealth hoarding.
Nature shows us the systems and methods that can be employed to create and grow regenerative and healthy economies. Using biomimicry to reimagine the world we are building towards can help us create thriving communities.
Focusing on the individual as a member of a broader communal web allows us to work towards financial habits and practices that meet the needs of all community members.
Traditional financial planning practices and focuses have often excluded and further marginalized People of the Global Majority, indigenous populations, the LGTQIA+ community, women, and others. New frameworks and practices must be created and imagined in order to build regenerative economies.
